Sonja Solomonovitch Interview

Sonja Solomonovitch Author of Dryad
You love the sea, where is your favorite place to relax?
I like to relax on the wild beaches of Stanley Park. Most Vancouverites don't swim in the ocean, but I do and so they look on and probably think I'm crazy.
What is your favorite music? Color? Fuzzy animal?
Alt Country. Blue. Doggies (and dolphins, I hear they're a bit fuzzy when they're young)
Tell us what inspired you to write fantasy?
I am a huge fan of Tolkien, the founder of high fantasy and also of Terry Pratchett, who makes fun of fantasy. I wanted to write something like a cross between the two: an exciting adventure with lots of laughs.
Are the characters based on people you know?
Sometimes they are, but each character is usually a mix of several people.
Do you have characters in mind, or do you imagine a story first?
That's an interesting question. The initial idea or spark usually comes in the form of a story, but then the characters take over and do whatever they want. It's mostly the characters that drive the plot.
What kind of research do you do for your books?
I often do "hands-on" research. I once took a sailing course just so I could describe historical naval battles. There's also reading and watching YouTube videos, which can be surprisingly helpful. For Dryad, I watched a lot of videos that showed creatures of the Amazon rainforest.
Did your martial training help you with the characters?
Yes, definitely! One of the characters, Teddy Goldman, is a martial arts expert and I used a lot of the things I learned from Aikido to define his philosophy.
What kind of books did you read that influenced your own writing?
I read a lot of classics when I was young. Now I tend more towards funny books, no matter what the genre. I even read the entire Shopaholic series!
What is the genre if this book, and the target audience?
It's Fantasy/Time Travel/New Adult. I think it's suitable for people 16 or older. There's some sexuality and violence but nothing really graphic. I hope adults of all ages will enjoy it too!
Solena is a dryad from the South American rainforest who is scorned by other dryads for her obsession with the human world. She likes to wear makeup, read human magazines such as Narcissism Carnival, and unlike self-respecting dryads who live under the stars, she lives in a tree house.
But when the rain forest is threatened by a timber corporation, it is Solena who is chosen to prevent disaster by going undercover in a human company.
What she discovers goes much deeper than simply the fate of the rain forest. The future of the world could be at stake.
The humans are going back in time in order to extract natural resources and circumvent environmental laws, and Solena is swept along on a journey back to the 17th century.
The dryad finds herself falling for the heir to the timber corporation, the handsome Rodney Love, but as her adventures take her back in time and deeper into the rain forest, she finds the possibility of another love, one that transcends time itself…
Who will win the dryad’s heart: a smooth-talking billionaire who graces the cover of Narcissism Carnival or a wild and unruly jungle warrior?
