Brand new from The Symbologist, Michelle Snyder
Mysterious structures, esoteric philosophies, and occult practices have an alluring power over those with curious minds. Something whispers to us from times long past, carrying the ghosts of Once Upon a Time into our lives. Everywhere we look on our Mother Earth we see evidence of civilizations long gone. And what we see are shadows of intelligent, resourceful people who infused their souls into stories and images which were passed on from generation to generation; messages from the grave. Understanding these messages is a dynamic motivation. "Hidden In Plain Sight" brings to the curious mind a better understanding of myths and folklore and the symbolism that accompanies them - discover who created these stories and enigmatic images as we reveal where our ancestors came from, what happened to them, and how they lived.
Life is a miraculous phenomenon. As much as we know today about our bodies, our planet, and the universe, we cannot explain any of it. We can observe, and describe cause and effect, but we cannot explain. Symbols have been used for millennia to depict the unexplainable.
In The Complete Dictionary of Symbols in Myth, Art, and Literature, J. Tressider writes: “The structures of mythology and symbolism grew out of societies that believed the individual was not alone and that life had a spiritual dimension.” This is evident in the Norse Yggdrasil, which symbolizes the origin and cycles of life and death, and attributes them to something beyond the corporeal world.

| Yggdrasil, Friedrich Wilhelm Heine |
The Axis Mundi represents the Earth’s axis from south to north, which is tilted at about 23.4°, creating the precession of the equinoxes of the Great Year. Our ancestors knew this, and had calculated the length of the Great Year, Great Months, Great Weeks, and Great Days. The Cosmic Tree, like the Axis Mundi, is considered to be at the center of the world, at the junction between the home of the gods, the realm of men, and the underworld known in Christian mythology as Heaven, Earth, and Hell.
All sacred and holy places, temples and sanctuaries, are an assimilation of this symbolic archetype. Yggdrasil is guarded by fearsome beings such as dragons, fiery serpents, or angels with swords of fire. In Christian depictions Yggdrasil is two trees: the Tree of Knowledge and the Tree of Life, both forbidden to humans. Perhaps it would make sense that, in Christian symbology the sin of partaking of the Tree of Knowledge would be obtaining knowledge, or more basically, being able to know.
